El patrimonio bibliográfico religioso en México

Abstract

Durante la Colonia, el afán evangelizador de los misioneros propició el desarrollode la cultura en la Nueva España. Al requerirse material de apoyo,se dieron a la tarea de crear doctrinasy cartillas bilingües en su mayoría, para enseñar a los indios tanto las letras divinas como las humanas. Con la llegada de las órdenes religiosas se fundaron instituciones culturales que necesitaron libros. La labor del obispo de México, fray Juan de Zumárraga,como educador, promotor de la imprenta, escritor e impulsor debibliotecas es notable. Gracias a los conventos se conserva todavía buena parte de dicho acervoDuring colonial times, the evangelizing efforts of missionaries encouraged the development of New Spain"s culture. Requiring written materials to support their work, they produced doctrinal works and epistles, most of which were in two languages, to teach the Indians about matters sacred and secular. With the arrival of the religious orders, cultural institutions with a need for books were founded. The work of Brother Juan de Zumarraga, Bishop of Mexico City, as a teacher, patron of the printer"s craft, writer, and advocate of libraries was outstanding. Thanks to the convents, a good number of those books still survive today.
