The Quatro libros de la naturaleza, by Friar Francisco Ximénez, in the milestone of the modern medical science

Abstract

Uno de los primeros libros de medicina mexicana, obra capital en el desarrollo y transformación de esta disciplina, es el salido de la pluma del dominico Francisco Ximénez e impreso en la casa de la viuda de Dávalos en el año de 1615. Esta rara obra, de la que hay pocos ejemplares en el mundo, tiene entre sus méritos haber iniciado la divulgación del conocimiento científico en México, además de ofrecer información etnográfica, científica y médica de las medidas terapéuticas de su tiempo. La obra del monje es considerada como piedra de toque, ya que propició el despertar de la conciencia en los diferentes periodos de investigación científica: en primer lugar, porque con la Segunda Real Expedición Botánica se impulsó el estudio de las plantas mexicanas a finales del siglo XVIII y, en segundo, porque al término de la centuria pasada, con la creación del Instituto Médico Nacional, el país empezó su participación en la ciencia moderna.One of the first books on Mexican medicine, a masterwork in the development and transformation of this discipline, is the one that came from the quill of the Dominican Francisco Ximénez, and was printed in the house of the widow of Dávalos in 1615. In addition to offering ethnographic, scientific, and medical information on the therapeutic measurements of its time, this odd piece, of which there are just a few copies in the world, has amongst its merits, the beginning of the disclosure of scientific knowledge in Mexico. The monk"s work may be considered a keystone, as it placates an awakening in the consciousness of the different periods in scientific research. Toward the end of the XVIII Century, the Second Royal Botanical Expedition speeded the study of Mexican plants. This was followed, at the end of the last Century, by the creation of the National Medical Institute, when the country began its participation within modern science.
