History of Mexican Medicine Historiography

Abstract

En este artículo el autor nos presenta una amplia bibliografía de la historia de la medicina en México. De acuerdo con José Sanfilippo, la historia de la medicina mexicana se puede dividir en tres diferentes etapas: la de la enseñanza de la materia, que establece la asignatura de historia de la medicina como obligatoria en el Plan de Estudios de la Facultad de Medicina en 1956; la etapa documental, con ilustres historiadores y bibliófilos como Francisco del Paso y Troncoso, Joaquín García Icazbalceta y el doctor Nicolás León, quienes nos ofrecen un panorama de la historia de la medicina en México desde el siglo XVI, hasta llegar a los modernos médicos del siglo XX, como los doctores Ignacio Chávez y Miguel E. Bustamante, y finalmente la etapa interpretativa, en la que diversos autores realizan el estudio y análisis de las obras de historia de la medicina que se han editado en nuestro país. In this article the author presents a broad bibliography of the history of medicine in Mexico. According to José Sanfilippo, the history of Mexican medicine can be divided in three different stages: the teaching of the discipline, which establishes the subject of History of Medicine as obligatory in the curriculum of the Faculty of Medicine, of the National University, in 1956; then the documentary stage, with illustrious historians and bibliophiles such as Francisco del Paso y Troncoso, Joaquín García Icazbalceta and doctor Nicolás León, who offer a comprehensive presentation of the history of medicine in Mexico from the 16th Century until the modern medical doctors of the 20thCentury, like Ignacio Chávez and Miguel E. Bustamante; and finally the interpretative stage, in which diverse authors study and analyze the publications regarding the history of medicine that have been edited in our country.
