Todos amigos sinceros en literatura y arte: la huella nacionalista en Angelina

Abstract

This essay’s objective is to describe the characteristics of nationalism which appear in Angelina (1893), Rafael Delgado’s second novel. In order to expand on this subject the author relies mainly on some of Ignacio Manuel Altamirano’s considerations regarding the creation of a national literature, which took place in the late 19th Century. Furthermore, the author tries to cast light on the opposition between this tendency and Modernism, starting from the fact that representatives of both shared the same context and must have faced the same problems. This is how the confluence of nationalist and modernist traits in a single work can be understood, and explained from the confusing literary panorama at the end of the Century. Lastly, the author focuses on the structure of Angelina, which seems to be a memoir rather than a novel, with abundant autobiographic contents. A double didactic intention can be derived from there: the first being the desire to show possible young readers how life was thirty years before, and the second expressing the continuos recommendations on how to lead a life which benefited society. Este ensayo tiene por objetivo describir las características del nacionalismo que aparecen en Angelina (1893), segunda novela de Rafael Delgado. Para desarrollar el tema la autora se apoya principalmente en algunas consideraciones de Ignacio Manuel Altamirano sobre la creación de una literatura nacional, empresa que conservaba su vigencia a fines del siglo xix. Asimismo, intenta matizar la oposición establecida entre esta tendencia y el Modernismo, pues parte del hecho de que los representantes de una y de otro compartieron el mismo contexto y debieron enfrentar la misma problemática. En este sentido es posible entender la confluencia de rasgos nacionalistas y modernistas en una sola obra, y explicarla a partir del confuso panorama literario finisecular. Por último se hace hincapié en la estructura de Angelina que, más que una novela, parece un libro de memorias, con alto contenido autobiográfico. De ahí puede desprenderse una doble intención didáctica: la primera, dada en el deseo de mostrar a los posibles lectores jóvenes cómo era la vida 30 años atrás, y la segunda, expresada en las continuas recomendaciones para llevar una existencia social provechosa.
