The Study of the Amerindian Linguistic Universe on the Mexican Society of Geography and Statistics (1833-1874)

Abstract

La necesidad de contar con información que permitiera hacer un diagnóstico estadístico y geográfico del país, dio origen a la creación de la Sociedad Mexicana de Geografía y Estadística, que tendría a su cargo la tarea de recopilar datos para tratar de conocer las características más importantes de México, desde la extensión y riqueza del territorio nacional, hasta las peculiaridades físicas y culturales dé la población. Una de las actividades primordiales de la SMCE fue la de estudiar el origen y diversidad de los grupos amerindios, mediante la aplicación de métodos como la filología comparada, o bien, a través de la evaluación histórica de las huellas lingüísticas. Desde sus inicios la Sociedad contó con gente reconocida por su experiencia en los campos de la geografía y de la estadística, como José Justo Gómez de la Cortina, Manuel Orozco y Berra y Francisco Pimentel, quienes aportaron sus valiosos conocimientos a la institución. The necessity of counting with information that allows to do a statistic and geographic diagnose of the country was the origin of creating a Mexican Society of Geography and Statistics, which would be in charge of gathering data in order to get to know the most important characteristics of Mexico, from the extension and richness of the national territory, to the physical and cultural peculiarities of its population. One of the primordial activities of the SMCE was to study the origin and diversity of the Amerindian groups, using methods such as compared philology, or through the historical evaluation of the linguistic traces. From its beginnings the Society counted with people known for their experience in the fields of geography and statistics, like José Justo Gómez de la Cortina, Manuel Orozco y Berra and Francisco Pimentel, who gave their valuable knowledge to the institution.
