About the First Inhabitants of Chiapas (16th-18th Centuries)

Abstract

A brief overview of the first writers in Chiapas (theologians, academics, and members of different religious orders) whose works included notable sermons, funeral prayers, poetry, and theological, grammatical, and philosophical dissertations that show the influence of their authors" religious training. These works, which are of great bibliographical and historical value, reflect the culture of a period and offer us an insight into the everyday life of the society of New Spain in Chiapas and Guatemala during the first years after independence.Breve repaso de los primeros escritores chiapanecos (teólogos, catedráticos y religiosos de las diversas órdenes) en cuya producción sobresalen sermones, oraciones fúnebres, poesías y disertaciones teológicas, gramaticales y filosóficas influidas por la preparación religiosa recibida. Sus obras, de gran valor bibliográfico e histórico, reflejan la cultura de una época y nos permiten conocer sus testimonios sobre la vida cotidiana de la sociedad novohispana de Chiapas y Guatemala en los primeros años de independencia.
