Metropolitan Culture and Porfirian Society: a Look through Public Entertainment

Abstract

Por medio de este artículo, la autora nos muestra diversos e interesantes aspectos de la vida social y cultural de la sociedad porfiriana del último tercio del siglo XIX y principios del XX, a través de los entretenimientos públicos. A principios del siglo XX, la sociedad porfiriana (dividida inevitablemente en ricos y pobres) podía disfrutar de los inicios del cinematógrafo, inventado en Francia por los hermanos Lumière. Podía asimismo practicar o asistir a juegos de béisbol, fútbol soccer, frontón o tenis. En fin, el teatro, los toros (considerados por algunos atildados funcionarios públicos como un espectáculo "salvaje, primitivo y sangriento"), el circo, las ferias y los paseos a sitios tradicionales como el bosque de Chapultepec o la Alameda Central, estaban también al alcance de los capitalinos de aquella época, según fueran sus gustos o posibilidades económicas. The author of this article shows us different interesting aspects of the social and cultural life of the porfirian society of the last third of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, through public entertainment. In the beginning of the 20th century, the porfirian society (inevitably split into rich and poor people), could enjoy the start of the cinematograph, invented in France by the Lumière brothers. They could also practice or attend games of sports, such as baseball, soccer, pelota court or tennis. Theatrical plays, bullfights (considered by some stylish officials as a "wild, primitive and bloody" show), the circus, fairs and promenades to traditional sites such as the Chapultepec forest or the Alameda Central were also within reach of the people living in the capital, according to their tastes or economic possibilities.
