Aztec Gardens

Abstract

Este texto es un acercamiento a los tipos, funciones y características de la jardinería de los antiguos mexicas, con objeto de definir las causas que hicieron posible su desarrollo y sus usos, e identificar a los beneficiarios de dichos espacios. De esta manera la autora se refiere a los jardines, huertos y parques (en su acepción de sitio cercado con plantas, para caza o recreo) que existieron en los señoríos de Tenochtitlán e Iztapalapa, así como los que tuvieron estos monarcas en regiones inmediatas, en lugares sometidos a su control. El presente estudio tiene por base los testimonios que dejaron los religiosos, médicos y soldados españoles a través de sus crónicas, cuando se llevó a cabo la conquista de México en el siglo XVI, así como también las más recientes investigaciones arqueológicas e interpretaciones históricas. This article takes us closer to the gardening types, functions and characteristics of ancient Aztecs, with the purpose of defining the causes that made possible its development and usage, and to identify the beneficiaries of these spaces. In this manner the author refers to gardens, orchards and parks (fenced areas with plants, used for hunting or amusement) that existed in the lordships of Tenochtitlan and Iztapalapa, as well as the areas which these monarchs possessed in neighboring regions that were under their control. This study is based on the testimonies transmitted by physicians, soldiers and religious Spaniards, left in their chronicles of the Mexican conquest back in the 16th Century, as well as on the most recent archaeological researches and historical interpretations.
