“Imprenta La Purísima Coronada”: Comments about the Typographic Repertory of a Printing Establishment in Michoacán (ca. 1895-)

Abstract

La Imprenta La Purísima Coronada" tuvo su época de mayor auge entre finales del siglo XIX y la tercera década del XX; este taller es un importante caso de estudio para las artes gráficas mexicanas, porque sigue funcionando y aún conserva parte del material gráfico original. Se emprendió un proyecto de rescate patrimonial, que comenzó con la catalogación del material iconográfico (clichés y viñetas). Este ensayo presenta las primeras aportaciones al estudio de los aspectos tipográficos de esa imprenta (tipos móviles y guarniciones diversas); ofrece el panorama general de las artes gráficas en México entre finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX; informa del desarrollo de la imprenta en Morelia y el asentamiento de los dueños, la familia Ginori, en la ciudad; refiere la situación del aprovisionamiento de material tipográfico en México durante el periodo de labores de la imprenta y concluye con una breve descripción desus proveedores internacionales. La Purísima Coronada Printing House had its peak season between the late 19th Century and the third decade of the 20th Century. This workshop is an important case study for Mexican graphic and printing arts because it is still working and retains part of the original art work. A heritage restoration project was undertaken, beginning with the classification of the iconographic material (clichés and vignettes). This essay presentsthe first contributions to the study of typographical aspects of this printing workshop (movabletypes and various ornaments). Furthermore, it provides an overview of the graphic arts in Mexico during the late 19th and early 20th Centuries; gives information on the development of printing in Morelia and the settlement of its owners, the Ginori family, in that city; mentions the supply status of typographical material in Mexico during the working period of La Purísima Coronada, and concludes with a brief description of its international suppliers.
