Notes on Alexander von Humboldt and his Work

Abstract

Parte del conocimiento científico se ha preservado hasta nuestros días gracias a su transmisión oral y escrita. Los manuscritos, incluyendo los "libros pintados" y los impresos, son muestra de ello. Sin embargo, al ser el estudio de la historia de la ciencia un amplio campo de investigación, se requiere de la consulta de publicaciones y manuscritos, a menudo dispersos, deteriorados e inaccesibles. Igual de importante que la recopilación de un repertorio bibliográfico de la obra de Alexander von Humboldt es la aproximación a su preservación física y difusión. Las nuevas tecnologías de información la segunda revolución Gutenberg proporcionan un marco para proteger, a largo plazo, la documentación electrónica y los materiales que comprende. Los modernos estándares aplicados a la documentación científica, las bases de datos textuales, multimediales, y su disposición simultánea a través de Internet, conforman el espacio en el que podría desarrollarse un proyecto de preservación y difusión del legado de Alexander von Humboldt al mundo. Part of the scientific knowledge has been preserved until our days thanks to its oral and written transmission. Manuscripts, including the "painted books" and prints, are an example of it. However, since studying the history of science constitutes such a wide investigation field, it requires the consulting of publications and manuscripts, often dispersed, deteriorated and inaccessible. Just as important as the compilation of a bibliographic repertory of Alexander von Humboldt"s works, is the approach to their physical preservation and diffusion. The new information technologies the second Gutenberg revolution provide a way to protect, in a long term, the electronic documentation and the materials contained in it. The modern standards applied to the scientific documentation, the text and multimedia databases, and their simultaneous disposition through the Internet make up the space in which a preservation and diffusion project of Alexander von Humboldt"s legacy to the world could be developed.
