The Convent of San Francisco de Veracruz

Abstract

El convento de San Francisco de Veracruz, erigido probablemente hacia 1656, permanece como testigo de lo que fue un acervo bibliográfico aún por investigar. Dos inventarios que posee la Biblioteca del Museo Nacional de Antropología e Historia, realizados en 1723 y en 1771, dan cuenta de una biblioteca franciscana llamada entonces "librería", que para 1771 albergaba 179 títulos y 279 volúmenes destinados principalmente a la predicación y la evangelización. Crónicas, narraciones históricas, genealogías, hagiografías, etcétera, escritas fundamentalmente en latín, algunas en castellano, pero también en mexicano, francés e italiano constituían el fondo bibliográfico de este convento. Ambos inventarios describen las obras en una especie de catálogo, con el nombre del autor, título de la obra y extensión de la misma. Los títulos inventariados son un testimonio de la herencia cultural del Veracruz colonial.The Convent of San Francisco de Veracruz, founded probably near the year of 1656, remains as a witness of what was a bibliographic collection still to be investigated. Two inventories owned by the Library of the National Museum of Anthropology and History, written in 1723 and 1771, give an account of a Franciscan library then called "librería" (book store), which to 1771 gave residence to 179 titles and 279 volumes basically directed to preaching and evangelization. Chronicles, historical narrations, genealogies, hagiographies, etc., written fundamentally in Latin, some in Castilian, but also in Mexican, French and Italian constituted the bibliographic fund of this monastery. Both inventories describe the works in a species of catalog, with the name of the author, title and extension of the work. The inventoried titles are a testimony of the cultural heritage of colonial Veracruz.
