Latest News Regarding an Old Story: the Genaro García Library

Abstract

In 1921 Mexico lost an exceptional library, probably the most valuable Mexican book collection from the first half of the 20th Century: the personal library of Genaro García (1867-1920), sold by his heirs to the University of Texas in Austin. This article reviews this occurrence. Through a profile of the eminent bibliophilist and book collector which was Genaro García, all documents covering this story are presented, accompanied by two unpublished letters from Herbert I. Prestley to Genaro Estrada that recount García"s interests regarding the sale of his library, event which occurred a few months after his passing away. En 1921 México pierde una biblioteca excepcional, quizá la biblioteca mexicana más valiosa de la primera mitad del siglo XX: la biblioteca personal que los herederos de Genaro García (1867-1920) vendieron a la Universidad de Texas en Austin. Este texto hace una revisión de este hecho. A partir de un perfil del eminente bibliófilo y coleccionista que fue García, se presentan los documentos que han abordado esta historia, y se acompañan de dos cartas inéditas de Herbert I. Prestley a Genaro Estrada, que refieren los intereses de García sobre la venta de su biblioteca, ocurrida a los pocos meses de su fallecimiento.
